Coroner Makes A Ruling In Brittany Murphy's Death

Despite her family's insistence to the contrary, drugs did play a role in Brittany Murphy's death. A coroner announced on Thursday that the 32-year-old actress died from multiple drug intoxication, pneumonia and "iron deficiency anemia" in what has been deemed an accidental death. Murphy was found unresponsive in her home on December 20th, where she was staying with husband Simon Monjack and her mother Sharon Murphy. Both have stated that they believed Brittany's death was due to a congenital heart murmur and denied rumors that the actress used drugs or suffered from an eating disorder. They also said that she'd been suffering from laryngitis and flu-like symptoms in the days before her death. Assistant Chief Ed Winter told People magazine that the drugs found in Murphy's system were not illegal, explaining, "It was only prescription and over-the-counter meds." However, he added, "This death could've been preventable. Murphy was planning on seeing a doctor, but she unfortunately passed away before she did. This was a case of a person with pneumonia who was anemic (having a low blood count) who was taking medication when she should've been getting medical treatment."
