Major Change Coming To Downtown MKE Landmark

December 7, 2016

The Gas Light building downtown.  20 stories high.  You know the one.  That big blue light that changes color from time to time is going to look a little bit different as of 6:15pm this Wednesday, December 7.

Upgrades to the LED lighting system will allow the flame to appear as if it is flickering, so it SHOULD look like a legit gas flame.  Pretty cool right?

The flame isn't just decorative, though.  Did you know it's also a weather report?  The light has served as a weather beacon for downtown Milwaukee since 1956.

The weather saying sill goes:

"When the flame is red, it's warm weather ahead. When the flame is gold, watch out for cold. When the flame is blue, there's no change in view. When there's a flickering flame, expect snow or rain."

It's hooked up to eleven different weather stations around Milwaukee, so you know its gotta be at least SOMEWHAT accurate...
