Leigh McNabb's Blog

Why

I've probably started this blog five times today.  I would think I had my brain wrapped around what I wanted to say and then, quite honestly, I get really mad and have to step away.  What I've been trying to write about all day are the horrendous events that took place in Oak Creek yesterday.  But is there much to say other than ask "why?"  Why do these things happen?  Why do they happen in movie theaters, in Temples, in high schools.  Is it ignorance?  Is it fear?  Is it for attention?  Perhaps it's a little bit of all of these things.  And, not one of those reasons is good enough.

My mom always said we'd never recognize the good times if we didn't have bad ones.  She is a smart lady but I don't think yesterday's events were what she had in mind.  I suppose the one good thing that came from this tragedy is the reminder to hug your loved ones a little tighter and tell the people you care about how much they mean to you.  I, also, think it's a reminder that as far as we think we've come, we still have a long way to go in regard to acceptance.

I said an extra prayer for our Sikh brothers and sisters last night and I'll do it again tonight...and the day after that.  I want them to know that one man's actions do NOT speak for this community and we are behind them 100%!

I don't think we'll ever really know why.  And will any reason ever be good enough, anyway?
